Today Jack and Connor took some photos of our lead singer in a costume at which he would wear whilst being C.DOT. Below is him in his potential costume.
Final Music Video
Practise Frame Effect
Today we found out how to do the frame drawing effect i described in my last post. Connor did this by filming a clip in the green screen room, importing it to premier and adding a trippy background. Once i had exported the video, i opened it up in Photoshop. This allowed me to access individual frames. I then continued to use the 'brush tool' to draw on each frame. This was time consuming but if i were to implement onion skinning, i would be able to make a fluid effect. A looped version of about 30 frames is available to view below. This took around an hour for me to do which was time consuming but i feel the effect is worth it. I will hone my skills on this over the next few eeks and hop to use this effect in the music video.
Artist Name and Font
Today we decided that we needed to choose a name for our artist at which connor is playing. This is something at which connor already decided was C.DOT. However as a group discussion we decided to try to find other names as C.DOT was used in his film opening last year. After pitching our own ideas as a group we decided that C.DOT was the best option. Our group discussion helped us to choose this name and this is a name at which we all liked.
Upon choosing to stick with this title, we continued to make a logo for the artist to use which would add to brand imaging. This can be seen below. I think this logo is effective due to the use of 3 different fonts, one for the 'C', one for the dot and one or the 'Dot'. I feel if this were to be placed on an album cover, website and music video, it would be recognizable. I made the image size huge meaning it would not lose quality. The 'C' is in the font 'Olde English' alon with the dot. The rest is in TopModern (TT).

This is font at which we will be using in to production of our music video. |
Record Label Logo
This is a record label at which we are going to use in our music video. Connor thought about what would complete the authenticity of the artist, and what is one thing that is common in the music industry..... A label. The label is called Illumination Records.
Letter to artist requesting permission
Below is our letter to the artist who for our song 'Nikes on my feet' has a record label at which is produced by Black Diamond Label.
However after realising that this song was in fact a mixtape this means that we didn't need permission to use the rights to the song as we are already granted them. Therefore we did not need to send the letter of consent.
Steal-O-Matic
Our teacher prompted us to make a mood-board like video compiling some shots and effects which we may decide to use in our one long video. This resulted in a kind of, out of time music video, but it looks nice all together. It effectively channeled my vision for what we want the video to be like by showing what effects after other effects will look like. The result can be seen below.
Lip syncing task
Today as a group we filmed a lip sync task towards our song Nikes on my feet. We decided that this would be a good time to see how Connor looks whilst rapping and to see if it would be good enough for the real thing.
After being prompted that our original lip-sync was not serious and didn't have the rapper image, we went back to the drawing board and created a new one which featured no props or other objects that could make my image look jokey. Connor also had abit more time to learn the tongue twisting lyrics. We decided to give it another go. The outcome can be seen below.

30 second breakdown
We were given a task to analyse the first 30 seconds of a music video. The music video which i have decided to anaylse is Coldplay - Scientist.
The first 30 seconds, starts alongside the music where the main aritst, Chris martin is shown. This shows that he is the most important person as he is centre of the frame and is shown first. He starts lip syncing straight away with the music. When the music starts his eyes open whilst the camera moves away from him. His eyes match the mattress colour and this shot looks as though he is really happy. The clothes he is wearing suggests that his mind is in conflict as in a white shirt he seems as though he is vulnerable, although his black jeans contrast with his top. The slow fade away into the long shot fits well with the song as it is slow paced. He does not move, this could suggest that he may have a disability as he cannot move. He is on a mattress in what looks like a poor run down place, a place where he doesn't want to be. The blue mattress looks like something he had when he was a young boy, he could be in a bad stage of his life. His body does not move throughout the first 30 seconds, is this something which will be a theme throughout the video. The Birdseye shot looks down on this person.

Here you can see C.DOT's social media pages which include twitter and Facebook. As you can see C.DOT is becoming a star already with high amounts of followers and likes.
Potential Album Cover
Connor started drafting album covers. He thinks he will make another one but it was interesting to draft the character that he will be portraying and his mannerisms. This picture was taken in the Cereal Killer Cafe in Shoreditch, a great location that we are considering filming in.
Further Research 2 - Editing Skills
After researching videos using cross media convergence Connor remembered an amazing effect in 'The Game' - Dreams. This features famous producer Dr. Dre holding up the The Game's album cover which he then moves from. This happens at 1 minute and 5 seconds and is an amazing example of advertising which we thought we would love to do in my music video. See the video below and the album cover under it.
Further Research 1 - Editing Skills
Today Connor did some further research after our film pitch to our fellow peers we looked up some effects which we could use. Connor liked the idea of an effect which has drawing on frames to create a live picture on a moving video. This can be seen in Justin Bieber's 'Where R U Now' video. This effect was created by allowing members of the public to draw on acetate which are then scanned on to a specific frame on the film.
This affect we thought would act well for a little section in our performance although we feel this would be very time consuming. We then decided that we could have this as a slight introduction for the first 4 seconds. Connor wanted to practise before we put it into our music Video straight away.

Availability Timetable
Today we created a Availability Timetable at which this is based on our timetables at school at which we can use our free periods to help eachother and this timetable lets us know what times people are free. As well as this we have set up a group chat on iMessage so that we can constantly keep in touch with eachother and share any ideas that we have.
Group Music Video Pitch
I am working in a group with Connor and Jack and today we pitched our three individual ideas to eachother and reflected on them to eachother. Below is my own opinion of Connor and Jacks music video pitches.
Reflections on other film pitches:
Mac Miller Ft Miguel - Weekend this was Jacks Music Video pitch at which he wanted a street style music video heavily based around a performance based music video. It would be a Hybrid music video with concept based music video. The concepts would of been rather abstract which doesn't have to relate to the lyrics. I personally did not like this song as i felt this song lacked pace at which i felt wouldn't allow many shot changes. I also felt this song would be better with a narrative at which i feel we could not fulfill. Therefore collectively we decided that this would not be the song at which we choose to be our music video towards.
Mac Miller - Nikes on my feet. This is the song which Connor chose to pitch to us. Connor wanted a music video at which was a hybrid, with performance and concept based music video. He wanted to be the lead in this music video. The song had lots of pace however the lyrics were not to hard to learn and to lip sync to therefore we felt as though this could be really effective. I personally thought that the chorus could be really effective although it is simplistic in the sense of the lyrics, I feel as though we can make use of the pace and the style of the music together. This song is mainly based around Performance. Although this Song has a Music video he is not a hugely well known artist therefore we are allowed to use this song for our own Music Video. As a Group we instantly decided that this was the song for us.

Individual Music Video Pitch
Chase & Status - End Credits
This song has a good pace at which can create a good variety of shots. It only has one lead singer therefore we wont have to both lip sync. This is quite a sad, dark song which has a constant speed which will make our music video entertaining.
George Ezra - Did you hear the rain?
This song is slightly different to other songs and i feel as though it could open up to a more abstract music video. It's lyrics are fairly simple at which can involve a variety of shots. There is also good pace in the song at which can create lots of different shots. As there is three males in our group i picked a male lead song so that one of us can be the lead in our music video.
Rudimental ft. Alex Clare - Give you up
This song is extremely fast paced with a good beat and this can lead to a variety of shots. The lead singer is male at which one of us can be the lead. This could be a narrative or performance based narratvie which could allow for a joint.

Performance, Concept, Narrative
Performance Based
Many music videos include performance from artists as part of the video. It was clips from performances at which music videos were developed from. Below is a Performance based music video:
Performance based Music videos are normally hard to find as they are normally mixed in with concept and narrative, because it is not as entertaining as just watching somebody sing with not very much happening.
With the quality of the technology available there is a variety of affects at which can be used.
They are normally shots at which contain the main artists performing. It can be a band or a solo artist performing on stage. The majority of the shots are close ups.
Concept Based
Concept videos are based around a single idea which are usually unusual or obscure for the audience. The abstract, unusual content attracts a wide range of many consumers which draws them in. A successful concept video will keep the audience entertained as it is slightly surreal in the sense that it is unusual. Below is a Concept based music video:
Concepts can be THEMATIC or SYMBOLIC:
THEMATIC -
There are lots of common themes in music videos and this mainly depends on the genre e.g. Rap has lots of street images.
SYMBOLIC -
Symbols are used to build up meaning e.g. Graveyard to death
Different types of lighting suggest different moods. e.g. White as happy
Concept videos can contain anything, they could match the lyrics or not it is a fairly wide option.
Narrative Based
These types of videos tell a story at which is in some way link to the lyrics e.g. a romantic love story goes wrong. The narrative could be a film in the sense of a beginning, middle and end. Usualy in a narrative based music video the introduction is the beginning of the story. Below is a Narrative based Music Video:
A Narrative music video could contain very fast paced shots, References to other intertextuality such as Michael Jackson's Thriller Music Video at which came from west side story. The artist is sometimes part of the story.
We also had to watch the following music videos and decide whether they were performance , Narrative or Concept Music Videos:
Performance - The living
This type of music video is a performance based Music video
Oasis - Stand By me
This type of music video is a Narrative based Music Video
OK Go - This too shall pass

Music Video Director Study
There are a wide range of music video directors below I have found out one more about the most famous ones.
Spike Jonze
is an American director, producer, screenwriter and actor, whose work includes music videos, commercials, film and television.
Jonze is well known for his music video collaborations with Fatboy Slim, Weezer, Beastie Boys, Björk and Kanye West. He was a co-creator and executive producer of MTV's Jackass.[1] He is currently the creative director of Vice Media, Inc..
Weapon of Choice - Fatboy Slim

What's Up, Fatlip? - Fatlip
Flashing Lights - Kanye West
Co-directed with West
Otis - Jay-Z & Kanye West
Afterlife - Arcade Fire
This video was directed live for the YouTube Awards
Dope - Lady Gaga
This video was directed live for the YouTube Awards
Only One - Kanye West feat. Paul McCartney
Hype Williams
is an American film director, film producer, screenwriter, and music video director.
Williams first displayed his work by tagging local billboards, storefronts, and playgrounds using HYPE as his graffiti tag. "That's probably what stimulated my interests in color," he says. "I wanted to be Basquiat or Keith Haring of the streets."
A signature style used by Williams throughout the vast majority of his videos was the Fisheye lens which distorted the camera view around the central focus. This was used in Gimme Some More by Busta Rhymes and The Rain by Missy Elliott; however, it was dropped by 2003, when he experienced his lowest level of production activity since the beginning of his career as a music video director.
Another signature style involves placing shots in regular widescreen ratio, while a second shot is split and placed in the upper and lower bars. Videos that use this style include "Diamonds on My Neck" by Smitty, So Sick by Ne-Yo and Snap Yo Fingers by Lil Jon. In addition to this, he frequently utilizes aerial and tracking shots which often move backwards or forwards, some techniques which can often be seen in "Rock the Boat" by Aaliyah and "She's a Bitch" by Missy ElliottIt is a method often used by Hype which allows his videos to be dynamic, multi-dimensional and atmospheric as opposed to having static camera angles. Further style traits include the use of slow motion action, deep focus, and smooth cutting.
Awards Williams has received for his video work are shown below
Billboard Music Video Award for Best Director of the Year (1996),
The Jackson Limo Award for Best Rap Video of the Year (1996) for Busta Rhymes
The NAACP Image Award (1997)
MTV Video Music Award in the Best Rap Video (1998)
The BET Award for Best Director (2006) for Kanye West's song Gold Digger
Michel Gondry
is a French film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is noted for his inventive visual style and distinctive manipulation of mise en scène.
He is well known for his music video collaborations with The Chemical Brothers, Björk and The White Stripes.

I normally listen to music through Spotify I don’t usually
pay to listen to music, as I can listen to it through Spotify or YouTube.
When? do you have a daily music routine? Is some music more
suitable at a certain time of day than another?
I listen to it when I am at work at the same time eachday.
The music I listen to is mainly based on how I am feeling. This is where I have
created various playlists.
Where? clubs, bedroom, gigs, car?
I listen to my music through headphones whilst I am at work.
I also listen to my music when I am at home in my bedroom.
Who with? do you share your music or is it an individual

phone at which I have downloaded the app Spotify. I also like to listen to
music when I am getting ready or when I want some chilled out time to myself.
Why? What are the pleasures associated with music
consumption? What does it offer the audience and what needs does it gratify?
I like listening to music as it is very calming but also
very motivating is certain situations. Certain songs make me feel different
emotions at I think each music affects each individual person differently. It
offers the audience entertainment as well as relaxation. People use music
differently.
USES AND GRATIFICATIONS THEORY
Personal Identification – Before a Football match I used to
listen to music and this would then inspire and make me more motivated to play
and to win.
Information - sometimes you learn something from a song, I learnt
to respect people’s views and opinions.
Entertainment – I like to listen to upbeat songs and songs
which make we want to dance.
Social Interaction - songs my friends and I would enjoy to
listen to as we would then always play them.
Banana Phone
We were given a task were we had to film various shos at which we were given two lessons to film and edit.
Below is our final Banana Phone music video:
Creative Filming and Editing Tasks
1) Filming a person
sitting down with the monitor window open and with another camera film the
monitor.
2) Cloning editing
task – tripod and camera must remain still in wide shot. Actor is filmed moving
in different parts of the shot. Standing by the board, sitting down. 6
different shots. Go to premiere link on how to edit it.
3) Depth of field
task – Do a distance little and large shot so that someone looks very small in
the background and another very large.
Place an object like a cup or a ball down maybe with grass
background - place the camera level with the object quite far away and then
zoom into it so the object is sharp but the camera is blurred.
Place your artist in the background and add various cut out
props to the foreground to float around the artist.
4) Reverse shot –
while the artist is singing get them to walk carefully backwards, but to add
excitement to the shot add obstacles for jumping over and ball throwing so it
can be reversed.
5) Wheelchair /
Tripod – we are going to simulate tracking and dolly shots. Camera on
wheelchair film artist moving towards you singing to camera one take 30
seconds.
Tripod shot – raise the front leg of the tripod so the
camera is pushed forward on the back legs.
6) Lego stop motion
– 30 still shots of lego action (one second each)
Premiere editing techniques to practice
- Cloning
shots -
- Split screen
- Blurred
background
- Make someone
colour and the rest black and white
- Glow effect

Star Profile
Born: August 29, 1958
Died: June 25, 2009 (aged 50)
Michael Jackson was apart of the Jackson 5 when he was just 10 years old he was performing as a lead singer. Below is a picture of Michael when he was part of the Jackson 5.
Michael was the eighth child of the Jackson family. HE first came into the music scene along with his elder brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon as a member of the Jackson 5 in 1964 when he just 6 years old! He then began his solo career in 1971 as a just an age of 13 a teenager.
Jackson's 2009 death stirred controversy and was ultimately ruled a homicide. Dr. Conrad Murray, who had been caring for the pop star at the time of his death, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter on November 7, 2011, later receiving a four-year prison sentence.
Below is the list on films that Michael Jackson has been in. He has also made films of his life at which shows how much of a high profile star he is. This is also shown in miss cast away where his name is in a larger font than everyone else's even though he does not have a star role. It is a method at which the marketing team know that where Michael Jackson is such a huge star his name can promote a film.
Michael Jackson's Albums
As you can see from Michael Jackson's album covers his image is key and his star image is mainly formed by his dance moves and the way he looks.
Prelim Evaluation
1)Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?
I worked with Connor and Jack and we worked closely together although we had a short amount of time to complete this prelim task. We also had a variety of days where we were helping elsewhere around the school as this was so late in the year there was many events which were just finishing. Between us divided the task so that each of us was given the right amount of work. At first however us as a group and the help of our teacher we all struggled to pick a song, this was then determined by a random selection at which we got Coolio ‘Gangsters Paradise’
2) How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?
The prelim task had to be around 1 minute long and we had to react in act the songs music video. As we had little time we had little preparation together as a group we had to act quickly and decisively. After watching the video we created a props and locations list as we needed to film as quickly as possible. We also created a small storyboard at which lacked detail as we had to rush this in order to film our task in the time limit.
3) What theories could you apply to the video you chose?
Our editing skills and performance didn’t replicate to the music video as much as we would have liked. The music video itself offered lots of theories. Carol Vernallis and Andrew Goodwin’s theories have been applied to this music video by editing in a similar way aswell as there was a relationship between the genre related style with the iconography.
4) What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it?
The technology we used was Adobe Premiere for editing and we used a green screen effect aswell as other effects on the system. We also used a camera to film our shots. The green screen also needed a variety of lights to make sure that we did not have a shadow, however this was something we must work on in our real task as there is a series of shadows in our prelim task.
5) What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?
We had to take in consideration when people were available as I was involved in welcoming year 5 and year 6 students to the school. We also had to consider the amount of time at which we had to plan, film and edit the music video. The editing was rushed as we had only one lesson to edit this however we managed to get it in on time. Connor also became ill at which we then had to change the lead role and I stepped in to perform. We also wanted to make sure that everyone did a bit of everything so we made sure that all of us edited a section, filmed a section and performed in a section. This would then for the real music video make us better in all areas.
6) How successful was your music video copy? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently? What did others say about your production?
Our music video overall was not successful the final video was poor. Although I feel this was not due to our group, at which I enjoyed working with Connor and Jack. It was down to a short time limit and we had people missing on key dates where we was supposed to film. This lead to a really short time to edit the video and as you can see from the video, there was some out of sync lip syncing. In the future I would make sure we have planned better before filming and make sure that we create a timetable for when people are free in my group. Planning I feel is essential otherwise you don’t know what you have to do or need to do I feel decisions which are planned are better. Although in the future I would give us more time. Other people said that for the short time that it was edited it was quite similar to the music video itself.
7) How does it compare with filming an opening to a film?
It is a different experience to filming an opening to a film as i watch more films and therefore I know more about them. In contrast I don’t usually watch music videos as I don’t really find them interesting.
