Performance Based
Many music videos include performance from artists as part of the video. It was clips from performances at which music videos were developed from. Below is a Performance based music video:
Performance based Music videos are normally hard to find as they are normally mixed in with concept and narrative, because it is not as entertaining as just watching somebody sing with not very much happening.
With the quality of the technology available there is a variety of affects at which can be used.
They are normally shots at which contain the main artists performing. It can be a band or a solo artist performing on stage. The majority of the shots are close ups.
Concept Based
Concept videos are based around a single idea which are usually unusual or obscure for the audience. The abstract, unusual content attracts a wide range of many consumers which draws them in. A successful concept video will keep the audience entertained as it is slightly surreal in the sense that it is unusual. Below is a Concept based music video:
Concepts can be THEMATIC or SYMBOLIC:
THEMATIC -
There are lots of common themes in music videos and this mainly depends on the genre e.g. Rap has lots of street images.
SYMBOLIC -
Symbols are used to build up meaning e.g. Graveyard to death
Different types of lighting suggest different moods. e.g. White as happy
Concept videos can contain anything, they could match the lyrics or not it is a fairly wide option.
Narrative Based
These types of videos tell a story at which is in some way link to the lyrics e.g. a romantic love story goes wrong. The narrative could be a film in the sense of a beginning, middle and end. Usualy in a narrative based music video the introduction is the beginning of the story. Below is a Narrative based Music Video:
A Narrative music video could contain very fast paced shots, References to other intertextuality such as Michael Jackson's Thriller Music Video at which came from west side story. The artist is sometimes part of the story.
