Prelim Evaluation

1)Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?

I worked with Connor and Jack and we worked closely together although we had a short amount of time to complete this prelim task. We also had a variety of days where we were helping elsewhere around the school as this was so late in the year there was many events which were just finishing. Between us divided the task so that each of us was given the right amount of work. At first however us as a group and the help of our teacher we all struggled to pick a song, this was then determined by a random selection at which we got Coolio ‘Gangsters Paradise’

2) How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?

The prelim task had to be around 1 minute long and we had to react in act the songs music video. As we had little time we had little preparation together as a group we had to act quickly and decisively. After watching the video we created a props and locations list as we needed to film as quickly as possible. We also created a small storyboard at which lacked detail as we had to rush this in order to film our task in the time limit.

3) What theories could you apply to the video you chose?

Our editing skills and performance didn’t replicate to the music video as much as we would have liked. The music video itself offered lots of theories. Carol Vernallis and Andrew Goodwin’s theories have been applied to this music video by editing in a similar way aswell as there was a relationship between the genre related style with the iconography.

4) What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it?

The technology we used was Adobe Premiere for editing and we used a green screen effect aswell as other effects on the system. We also used a camera to film our shots. The green screen also needed a variety of lights to make sure that we did not have a shadow, however this was something we must work on in our real task as there is a series of shadows in our prelim task.

5) What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?

We had to take in consideration when people were available as I was involved in welcoming year 5 and year 6 students to the school. We also had to consider the amount of time at which we had to plan, film and edit the music video. The editing was rushed as we had only one lesson to edit this however we managed to get it in on time. Connor also became ill at which we then had to change the lead role and I stepped in to perform. We also wanted to make sure that everyone did a bit of everything so we made sure that all of us edited a section, filmed a section and performed in a section. This would then for the real music video make us better in all areas.

6) How successful was your music video copy? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently? What did others say about your production?

Our music video overall was not successful the final video was poor. Although I feel this was not due to our group, at which I enjoyed working with Connor and Jack. It was down to a short time limit and we had people missing on key dates where we was supposed to film. This lead to a really short time to edit the video and as you can see from the video, there was some out of sync lip syncing. In the future I would make sure we have planned better before filming and make sure that we create a timetable for when people are free in my group. Planning I feel is essential otherwise you don’t know what you have to do or need to do I feel decisions which are planned are better. Although in the future I would give us more time. Other people said that for the short time that it was edited it was quite similar to the music video itself.

7) How does it compare with filming an opening to a film?

It is a different experience to filming an opening to a film as i watch more films and therefore I know more about them. In contrast I don’t usually watch music videos as I don’t really find them interesting.

Prelim - Lyrics

Below are the lyrics to our prelim song and the RED is being lip synced by Connor and Yellow is being lip synced by Jack.
"Gangsta's Paradise"

As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I take a look at my life and realize there's nothin' left
'Cause I've been blasting and laughing so long,
That even my mama thinks that my mind is gone
But I ain't never crossed a man that didn't deserve it
Me be treated like a punk you know that's unheard of
You better watch how you're talking and where you're walking
Or you and your homies might be lined in chalk
I really hate to trip but I gotta loc
As they croak, I see myself in the pistol smoke, fool
I'm the kinda G the little homies wanna be like
On my knees in the night saying prayers in the streetlight

Been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise

Look at the situation they got me facin'
I can't live a normal life, I was raised by the streets
So I gotta be down with the hood team
Too much television watching got me chasing dreams
I'm an educated fool with money on my mind
Got my 10 in my hand and a gleam in my eye
I'm a loc'd out gangsta set trippin' banger
And my homies is down so don't arouse my anger, fool
Death ain't nothing but a heartbeat away,
I'm living life, do or die, what can I say
I'm 23 now, but will I live to see 24
The way things are going I don't know

Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me

Been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise

Power and the money, money and the power
Minute after minute, hour after hour
Everybody's running, but half of them ain't looking
What's going on in the kitchen, but I don't know what's cookin'
They say I gotta learn, but nobody's here to teach me
If they can't understand it, how can they reach me
I guess they can't, I guess they won't
I guess they front, that's why I know my life is out of luck, fool

Been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise

Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me
Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me

Prelim Task - Preparation

This week we were given a task at which we are asked to replicate a music video. I was put into a group with fellow class members Connor and Jack at which we were given the music video of:

Coolio - Gangsters Paradise

In this prelim task we are asked to do a logical cut off point at which is around a minute long in this case we are replicating just over a minute with this song. In this video there are three main characters at which the roles are shown below:
We decided early on that we would allocate roles and this worked perfectly as we are in a gorup of three with a video with three people in.

Archie - The women
Connor - Coolio
Jack - the other male man
